Wind, Wind, Wind

Posted by seanabrady on September 23, 2005

The wind is really starting to blow now. It is sustained I would guess twice as strong as it has been today. They are reporting that the winds for the storm are down to 120 mph. Cameron, LA seems to be the new target, and it would appear that many people have not left that area.

Lake Charles, where many Houstonians go to gamble, is reporting some flooding. They can withstand up to a 12 foot storm surge without major flooding. In fact many people evacuated from Houston to Lake Charles. According to the local sheriff those casinos have been closed and evacuated.

Beaumont looks to be getting hammered with wind and rain. It’s to early to say we are lucky, that we dodged a bullet, but to see what was slated to come here hit somewhere else is a relief for us, and unfortunate for those in the line of the storm.

An eerie view outside

Posted by seanabrady on September 23, 2005

We just stepped outside to check out some wind gusts…thats what you are supposed to do during a tropical storm right?  To our suprise we found a visible sun setting in the west and a rainbow to the east.  It is still quite windy, and it is actually raining a little bit.  The Pearland police department drove by checking on things.  They will be out driving about until the “worst” of the storm arrives.  They were not sure when or what that would be.

It’s finally a bit nicer out, it was quie warm all afternoon.  My A/C has really been keeping up well though, and its getting better now as the sun goes down and the temp. drops a bit.

The pictures are on Flickr (link in the sidebar on the right).

Our first rains & more wind

Posted by seanabrady on September 23, 2005

We got a small bit of rain and some strong wind gusts. News 2 in Houston is starting to talk about this meaning thunderstorms in Houston. Some strong gusts, but mostly 20ish mph for wind speeds. Its still to early to say, but it seems that this is headed over to Louisiana. Looks like I may spend tomorrow putting the house back together. We moved some furniture closer to the center of the house etc. I don’t anticipate needed to use our shelter in the pantry.

New Track

Posted by seanabrady on September 23, 2005

Looks like the eye might even miss Texas.  They are working on new wind numbers, but things contniue to look up for Texas.  Also interesting is an increase in speed from 10 to 12 mph, which can be good for rain quantity.  Keeping an eye on it.

Damage Estimates

Posted by seanabrady on September 23, 2005

Here is a site that estimates damage.  This is the Texas list but you can back up and see other states.  Damage is an unfortunate side effect of any hurricane.  These estimates are interesting, and broken down by county and location in the county.  Fun with statistics if you like that sort of stuff.

Weather and Power Update

Posted by seanabrady on September 23, 2005

I have started to get reports from friends that they have lost power in the Woodlands, and out on hwy 290.  Both of those locations are far north of us.  I went outside to take some pictures.  The weather here is holding but winds are increasing steadily.  I would say we are getting up to 15 mph gusts on occasion, with some pretty steady winds otherwise.  The first bands of the storm are here, so we may lose power soon as well.  I will continue to write posts and will upload them if we have power.

Pictures will be on flickr soon…one of outside, and a few of Iain having a pre-hurricane bath.  very cute.

Sad evacuation story

Posted by seanabrady on September 23, 2005

This is exactly why we turned around and came home. I was very worried about losing Kramer, Linus and Fiona. This is a sad story, but one unfortunatly that has been played out many times over the past couple days in Houston. Perhaps the SPCA needs to cite those responsible for the evacuation plan for animal cruelty.
